Finals week for the World Cup of Trams

It’s finals week in the UKTram World Cup of Trams with the winners of the four rounds now battling it out in the semi-finals.

Group winners of the best tram stop for sport, leisure and shopping and most picturesque tram stop are now in the ‘best stop’ semi-final with Supertram’s Meadowhall Interchange, Deansgate-Castlefield in the centre of Manchester and two entries from the West Midlands – Library and Town Hall, all vying for a spot in the final.

In the best tram semi-final, Metrolink’s Pride tram, West Midlands Metro’s blue livery and their tram 31 named after legendary footballer Cyrille Regis are joined by the Stourbridge Shuttle.

Jamie Swift, Marketing and Communications Manager at UKTram, said: “We’re delighted at the response to this light-hearted competition that’s generating plenty of positive digital media for the nation’s light rail systems.

“We aimed to put tram travel back in the public eye as we emerge from lockdown and commuters start returning. It’s been a great success, with over 8,300 votes cast so far – and it’s easy to vote and keep up with the polls on Twitter, @worldcupoftrams.

Polling for the semi-finalists is open now and continues until 8pm on Thursday (March 18), while voting for the final opens at 8am on Friday and runs until 8pm on Sunday (March 19).

Jamie added: “We hope the competition has managed to put a smile on the faces of tram fans and Twitter followers everywhere. It has also helped to remind the public what an essential part of their community the local tram network has become and how much it contributes to local lives and to the local economy.”

The results of the final will be announced once voting closes on Sunday evening.
