UKTram has relaunched its Operational Innovation Group, establishing a dedicated forum for the light rail sector to explore new ideas, share operational experience, and identify practical opportunities for innovation.

UKTram has added two new Best Practice Guidance documents to its member resource library, developed by the Light Rail Engineers Group (LREG). These new documents share experience and insight from across the sector, helping members exchange knowledge and learn from operational best practice.

UKTram's Operations Manager, Steve Duckering, visited the Sheffield Supertram network on Monday, the 22nd June, to support discussions around improving passenger management and customer experience at major events.

Members of UKTram’s Light Rail Operators Committee (LROC) met on the 25th of June to discuss workforce development and share best practice for its second meeting of 2026. The session, initially scheduled at London Tram depot, was moved online due to disruptions from the recent heatwave and rail service cancellations.

Members of the Mixed-Use Railway (MUR) community met in Stourbridge this week to discuss the future direction of the initiative, alongside the launch of a new industry webpage hosted by UKTram. Held at the Bonded Warehouse on Monday, 18th May, the meeting brought together organisations involved in the growing cross-industry initiative, which promotes a more integrated and flexible approach to rail development.

UKTram has announced new leadership for its Light Rail Operations Committee (LROC), following the recent decision by Steve Mabey to step down from his role as Chair.

Held at UKTram’s offices, representatives from across the heritage tramway community met online and in person to share recent updates and explore opportunities to strengthen engagement with visitors. It was acknowledged that this was the 40th meeting of the group which has been running for over ten years.

UKTram’s recent Trade & Trams session brought suppliers, engineers and operators together for a focused afternoon exploring innovation and technical practice across the light rail sector. The online session took place on 31st March for Light Rail Engineering Group (LREG) members. 40 people joined to share and learn about new technologies and lessons learned from light rail systems.

The latest UKTram Light Rail Engineers Group (LREG) meeting and Best Practice Day on took place on 12th and 13th February 2026. Held at Network Rail offices and hosted by Transport for Wales in Cardiff, the two-day programme brought together sector engineers and supply chain representatives, both in person and online, to share updates and explore learning across light rail systems.

The recent UKTram Heritage Tramway Committee meeting reviewed progress across several priority workstreams supporting the safe and sustainable operation of heritage tramways. The meeting, held online on Tuesday, 27th January 2026, confirmed continued strong engagement from across the UK’s heritage tramway sector, with regular attendance from operators, the Isle of Man tramways and representation from ORR/HMRI.

UKTram has appointed Colin Robey as Honorary President in recognition of his exceptional and longstanding contributions to the organisation and the broader light rail sector. Colin has spent over sixty years working in heavy and light rail, including almost twenty years with UKTram. During this time, he has shaped strategy, development, governance and professional standards.

The UKTram Centre of Excellence met to review progress on several technical and strategic projects. The focus was on tramway design guidance and developing skills and apprenticeship pathways for the light rail sector.

UKTram’s Owners and Authorities Group (OAG) held its first meeting of the year on Wednesday, 13th January. The meeting was chaired by group Chair Chris Hopkinson and Vice Chair Stuart Lowrie and representatives from across the sector met online to align priorities and progress workstreams.
