UKTram's Operations Manager, Steve Duckering, visited the Sheffield Supertram network on Monday, the 22nd June, to support discussions around improving passenger management and customer experience at major events.
Hosted by Trevor Stocker, Head of Service Delivery at South Yorkshire Supertram, and Harry McCrae, Light Rail Performance & Delivery Manager from South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, the visit focused on two key locations on the network – Leppings Lane and Arena tram stops – where large sporting fixtures, concerts and public events regularly generate significant passenger demand.
The visit explored how infrastructure improvements and operational best practice could help improve customer flow and enhance passenger experience during large-scale events, with discussions around how existing layouts could evolve to better manage large crowds while balancing operational requirements, stakeholder needs and the constraints of legacy infrastructure. The group also explored examples of best practice from across the UK and internationally, identifying opportunities to inform future proposals.

As part of the visit, the team reviewed the current on-site layouts and discussed the potential role of design specialists and broader industry expertise in developing practical solutions.
Steve Duckering, Operations Manager at UKTram, said:
"One of UKTram's greatest strengths is bringing operators together to share experience and learn from one another. By working collaboratively, we can explore solutions and help improve customer experience. It was great to spend time with the Sheffield team looking at how we can continue improving the customer journey for events and considering how lessons from across the sector could support this too.’’
Trevor Stocker, Head of Operations at South Yorkshire Supertram, added:
"Major events present unique challenges and it's incredibly valuable to be able to draw on the knowledge and experience available across the UKTram network. Having Steve visit the locations gave us the opportunity to discuss ideas on site and begin shaping solutions that will ultimately improve the experience for our customers."
