A summer of celebration for the Isle of Man’s heritage transport

The Isle of Man's transport heritage received significant attention this summer, highlighted by a successful Manx Heritage Transport Festival and a month of celebrations across the Island's historic networks.

Taking place from 28thJuly to 2nd August, the annual festival offered enthusiasts and visitors the chance to experience the Isle of Man's working heritage transport through special services and events that celebrated the history, people, and skills behind these networks.

This year's festival was made even more special, as the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway marked its 150th anniversary on 7th August. Six horse trams participated in a special anniversary cavalcade along Douglas Promenade, alongside an open day at the tramway's stables and depots, marking 150 years since the Horse Tramway began carrying passengers in 1876.

The Isle of Man Post Office also celebrated the milestone with a special Manx Heritage Transport: Buses & Horse Trams stamp collection, issued to coincide with this year's celebrations.

The collection features a notable UKTram connection, with Ian Longworth, Vice Chair of the joint UKTram/HRA Heritage Tramway Committee, shown on the £3.62 stamp driving horse Torrin and tramcar 21.

The festival and anniversary celebrations followed His Majesty King Charles III's visit to the Island in July as Lord of Mann. During his visit, The King travelled on the Douglas Bay Horse Tramway and unveiled a commemorative plaque marking its 150-year history.

Events such as the Manx Heritage Transport Festival play an important role in keeping transport heritage visible and relevant. They give visitors the opportunity to experience historic systems in operation while showcasing the specialist knowledge and practical skills required to maintain them.

Beyond their historic significance, the Isle of Man’s heritage tramways and railways also make an important contribution to the Island’s visitor economy. Events attract enthusiasts and visitors from further afield, supporting tourism and demonstrating the economic value of keeping these transport systems in operation.

Further heritage transport events are planned for the Island. Isle of Man Railways will host an End of Season Finale on 31st October and 1st November 2026, and the Manx Heritage Transport Festival will return from 27th July to 1st August 2027.
