European light rail leaders have heard how colleagues in the UK are planning to recruit and retain the next generation of sector professionals.

In a presentation at the Mainspring European Light Rail Congress in Malaga last week, UKTram Technical Officer Dan Hill outlined ambitious proposals to bridge a growing skills gap by highlighting the rewarding career options offered by tramways and similar transit systems.

“We’re also committed to looking at ways to remove some of the perceived barriers to a career in a light rail by actively promoting equality and diversity, “encouraging women, minorities and underrepresented groups to consider careers in transportation through targeted programs and partnerships,” he explained.

“At the same time, UKTram is stepping up its promotion of the benefits of working in light rail, including job security, competitive salaries and the opportunity to be at the forefront of innovation and technology driving sustainable transport.”

Dan went on to explain that UKTram is developing mentorship programs that connect young people with experienced professionals while offering work experience placements within the sector.

“In the near future, we’re also planning to organise dedicated networking events and conferences where young people can meet industry leaders, learn about trends and explore job opportunities,” he added.
