West Midlands Metro has announced Midlands Air Ambulance Charity as its Charity of the Year for 2026, launching a year-long programme of fundraising and awareness activity across the network.
The partnership continues Metro’s colleague-led approach to charitable support, with teams planning a range of activities throughout the year to help fund the charity’s life-saving helicopter and critical care operations, which receive no government funding.
Operating 24/7 across six counties, Midlands Air Ambulance Charity responds to an average of 10 missions a day. The first fundraising activity, a network-wide raffle, will mark the start of the partnership and a year of support for one of the region’s most vital emergency services.

A new mural at Netherthorpe tram stop is helping transform the underpass into a brighter, more welcoming space for passengers, as part of ongoing improvements to Supertram infrastructure.
The mural was created by local artist Rob Lee and the artwork introduces bold colours and patterns to areas that were previously unpainted. The latest installation builds on the first phase of the community mural project, which received strong public support, with feedback showing increased perceptions of safety and wellbeing. The project highlights how creative placemaking can enhance tram stops, improve passenger experience and support safer, more attractive public transport environments.

Keir Starmer and Eluned Morgan visited Transport for Wales’s Taff’s Well depot this week, highlighting joint UK and Welsh Government support for the future of rail across Wales and the Borders.
During the visit, the Prime Minister endorsed TfW’s long-term vision for the network, Today, Tomorrow, Together, emphasising the importance of delivering rail improvements “side by side” with the Welsh Government. The depot visit showcased progress already made on new trains, infrastructure and skills, as well as the next phase of investment planned for the network.

Nexus has upgraded its customer reporting system on the Tyne and Wear Metro, switching from SMS to a free-to-use WhatsApp service to make reporting issues quicker and more accessible.
The new WhatsApp number allows customers to report anti-social behaviour, safety concerns or incidents discreetly, without incurring network charges, and enables images or video footage to be shared directly with Metro’s control room.
SMS reporting remains available for customers who do not use WhatsApp, alongside reporting via the Pop App, station Help Points and on-board call buttons.
The change forms part of Nexus’s wider commitment to passenger safety, complementing ongoing investment in CCTV, security and close working with local police to respond swiftly to issues across the network.
