UKTram Operations Manager, Steve Duckering, joined international transport leaders in Newcastle on 6–8 October for the UITP Regional & Suburban Railways Division Meeting.

Hosted in the birthplace of the modern railway, the event was supported by valued UKTram member, Hitachi Rail. It featured insights from political and industry leaders, including Cllr Martin Gannon, Leader of Gateshead Council and Deputy Mayor of the North East Combined Authority.

Attendees also heard from Network Rail, Transport for the North, and the International Union of Railways (UIC), who reflected on the pivotal role of regional rail in supporting economic growth and social mobility.

The meeting also featured presentations from across Europe, including Spain’s Oriol Juncadella Fortuny, who discussed how digital innovation is improving efficiency, and Germany’s Fabio Bohner, who shared lessons from efforts to reintroduce passenger services on rural lines.

Delegates also participated in technical visits of the Northumberland Line and the newly redeveloped Gosforth Depot, gaining firsthand insights into the latest investments in rolling stock and infrastructure in the North East.

Reflecting on the event, Steve Duckering said:

“Another great opportunity to connect with international colleagues and learn how regions are tackling similar challenges. There is a real sense of shared purpose in driving modal shift and making public transport more accessible to everyone.”

The meeting emphasised the importance of collaboration between regional, suburban and light rail networks in shaping the future for public transport, a goal closely aligned with our ongoing work to promote innovation and sector-wide knowledge sharing.
