Strengthening sector competency, capability and safety
UKTram has supported the delivery of its first Light Rail and Tramway Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) training course, marking an important step in strengthening sector competency, capability and safety. Delivered in partnership with Skillstep Group in Crewe from 30th March to 1st April 2026, the three-day course combined theoretical learning with practical, hands-on training, providing delegates with a structured understanding of UK light rail OLE systems and safe working practices.
Participants from across the sector attended, including representatives from Beamish Museum, Blackpool Transport, Transport for Greater Manchester and London Trams.

The course covered key aspects of OLE systems, including health and safety requirements, core components and terminology, maintenance processes and construction and adjustment techniques. A significant focus was placed on applying learning in a real-world context, with delegates undertaking practical tasks using industry tools and equipment.
UKTram supported the development and delivery of the course in an advisory capacity, working with Skillstep Group to ensure the content reflected the specific requirements of light rail systems.
Reflecting on the course, UKTram Lead Engineer Phill Terry said:
“It’s encouraging to see members investing in this type of training and building capability within their teams. The practical element was particularly valuable, giving delegates the opportunity to apply learning in a way that reflects real working environments. Feedback from those attending has been positive, and it’s clear there is value in continuing to develop this type of offering for the sector.”
Looking ahead, UKTram is exploring opportunities to deliver further training sessions, with interest from the sector helping to shape future demand.
Phill added:
“The course has been developed by the sector, for the sector, providing an understanding of light rail OLE components and systems rather than focusing on individual network setups. It’s designed to give delegates knowledge they can apply across different environments.”
UKTram will continue to work with partners to review feedback and explore opportunities to develop further training sessions, supporting ongoing improvements in skills, safety and consistency across the sector.
