UKTram launches new Light Rail and Tramway OLE training course

UKTram has developed a Light Rail and Tramway Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) training course, designed to support confident and competent working for staff involved in tramway OLE maintenance and related activities.

Delivered in partnership with an NSAR-accredited training provider, the course combines theoretical learning with practical, hands-on training, giving delegates a clear understanding of UK light rail OLE systems and the requirements for working safely around them.

The three-day course will take place in Doncaster on 30th - 31st March and 1st April 2026 and is aimed at light rail and tramway operators looking to strengthen internal capability, consistency and confidence in OLE maintenance and construction activities.

The course covers:

  • The function and main components of UK light rail OLE systems

  • Health, safety and regulatory requirements for safe working

  • Typical OLE maintenance activities and processes

  • Practical construction and deconstruction tasks using correct tools and equipment

Training is delivered through a combination of classroom-based sessions, group discussion and Q&A, alongside practical training on an OLE span, to make sure learning is grounded in real-world application. Delegates are assessed through both theory and practical evaluation, with successful completion leading to certification.

To maintain quality and interaction, learner numbers are limited to a maximum of eight delegates per course.

The first course is being offered at a reduced cost, supported by UKTram, reflecting the organisation’s continued commitment to improving skills, safety and professional standards across the light rail sector.

Delegates are expected to attend all three days to be eligible for certification. While there are no formal prerequisites, participants would normally have completed training such as Working at Height, Emergency First Aid and Safe Manual Handling.

Booking information

The cost for the course is £1,684.80 (including VAT) per delegate, with travel and accommodation arranged independently.
