UKTram remembers David Walmsley and his contribution to light rail

UKTram is saddened to learn of the passing of David Walmsley, a respected member of the light rail community whose knowledge and contribution to the sector spanned many decades.
David played an important role in bringing the tramway industry together at a time when it had relatively little representation. Through his work with the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT), he provided a platform for light rail professionals to meet, exchange ideas and discuss the challenges facing the industry.
His contribution continued with the formation of UKTram in 2005, when he brought valuable experience of working within a trade organisation to the newly established association.
Colin Robey, a longstanding colleague and fellow member of UKTram's Centre of Excellence, reflected on David's early involvement:
"It may seem quite strange, looking at the current situation, that the tramway industry should be a member of what was, and is, fundamentally a bus and coach organisation, but quite frankly no-one else was interested in representing the tram industry, and we should be forever grateful to David for providing the platform for us to interact with each other."
Following his retirement, David accepted Colin's invitation to join UKTram's Centre of Excellence, where he continued to contribute his considerable experience and expertise.
Colin recalled David's remarkable ability to analyse information and translate complex issues into thoughtful, well-reasoned reports. Among his contributions was representing the UK in a European study examining pedestrian safety around tramways.
Tim Kendell, who knew David for many years through his involvement in the light rail sector, also paid tribute to his knowledge, thoughtful approach and the respect he earned from colleagues.
“I have known him for many years, firstly when he was at the Confederation of Public Transport and I was at the Department for Transport and latterly at the Light Rail Transit Association and UKTram. He was always a gentleman, and I respected his ability to analyse an issue and come up with thoughtful and well-reasoned responses. He was well respected in both the LRTA and UKTram and he will be missed.”
Beyond his professional contribution, David will be remembered for his kindness, good humour and the friendships he developed throughout his career. Colin added, "He really was an absolute gentleman, and whilst it's a much-used phrase, he never had a bad word about anyone."
David was also a familiar face at the annual Christmas lunch on the steam railway, a tradition shared with friends and colleagues that Colin remembered with particular fondness.
His passing represents a significant loss to UKTram's Centre of Excellence and the light rail community. Those who had the pleasure of working alongside him will remember his commitment to the industry, willingness to share his knowledge, and thoughtful contributions.
UKTram extends its sincere condolences to David's wife, Sue, his family, friends and colleagues.
A fuller account of David's life and career is available in the obituary published by the Light Rail Transit Association.
