UKTram has confirmed the appointment of new and returning Board members following its Annual General Meeting, held on Wednesday, 28th January 2026, as the organisation continues to strengthen leadership and long-term direction for the light rail sector.
Members elected Guillaume Chanussot and Simon Coulthard as Non-Executive Directors, bringing extensive experience across light rail, heavy rail and public transport governance. Both appointments reinforce UKTram’s role as a connector across modes and stakeholders, at a time when collaboration and integration remain central to the sector’s future.

Guillaume Chanussot currently serves as CEO of Transdev UK & Ireland and has held senior leadership roles across some of the UK’s most significant light rail and metro operations, including Manchester Metrolink, Nottingham Express Transit and Docklands Light Railway. His background spans executive leadership, financial turnaround, governance and international engagement, alongside involvement in light rail operations and strategy.
Reflecting on his appointment, Guillaume shared:
"I am delighted to be appointed to the UKTram Board at such an important time for the light rail sector. Light rail has a critical role to play in delivering sustainable, integrated and passenger-focused urban transport and UKTram is central to supporting collaboration, best practice and innovation across the industry. I look forward to working with fellow Board members, partners and stakeholders to help strengthen the sector and support the continued growth of high-quality light rail. "

Simon Coulthard brings more than three decades of rail industry experience and has played a pivotal role in strengthening relationships between the heavy and light rail sectors.
As Head of Light Rail at Network Rail, Simon has led the delivery of the UK’s Tram Train Pilot, supported the development of tram-train guidance and helped advance the Mixed Use Railway (MUR) initiative. Additionally, Simon chairs UITP’s Regional and Suburban Railways Committee and sits on its Policy Board. Simon commented:
“I am delighted and honoured to have been elected to the UKTram Board. I hope to add a new dimension to help UKTram and its members navigate the impending reform of the GB rail industry; and be in a stronger position as a result. I look forward to working with my Board colleagues to shape the future direction of UKTram to maximise the benefits of this fantastic sector.”
Commenting on the appointments, James Hammett, Managing Director of UKTram, said:
“These appointments bring valuable breadth of experience to the Board. Guillaume and Simon both have a strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the sector, and their insight will be an asset as UKTram continues to support innovation and closer integration across modes.”
The AGM also confirmed the re-election of Sophie Allison, Managing Director of West Midlands Metro, and Lindsay Murphy, Director of LEMentary Ltd and an independent light rail specialist, ensuring continuity and retained expertise on the Board.
James Hammett added:
“Sophie and Lindsay continue to make a strong contribution to UKTram’s work, and we’re pleased to see their ongoing commitment to supporting the sector through the Board.”
UKTram would like to thank Jo Smedley (née Bentley) for her valued contribution to the organisation. Jo has brought insight and commitment to her role, supporting UKTram’s work and the wider light rail community during her time with the organisation. Her contribution has been greatly appreciated by colleagues and members and Jo leaves with our sincere thanks.
Members also paid special tribute to Colin Robey, recognising an extraordinary career and a lasting contribution to both UKTram and the UK light rail sector.
With more than 60 years in the industry, including two decades of service with UKTram, Colin has helped shape modern light rail through major infrastructure projects, policy and his immeasurable commitment to mentoring. Widely regarded as an inspiration and trusted advisor, Colin’s influence on the sector will continue to be felt for many years to come.
Taken together, the AGM outcomes reflect a Board with a positive mix of operational and strategic expertise, well placed to support UKTram as the voice of light rail in the UK and British Isles.
