Codemakers Limited, the parent company of Metrotech, has been recognised at this year’s Computing - Cloud Excellence Awards, receiving the ‘Highly Commended’ distinction in the Most Innovative Cloud Product or Service category for its flagship product, Permit+.
Developed in partnership with Edinburgh Trams and in conjunction with UKTram, Permit+ is a cloud-based Authority to Work platform and mobile app designed specifically for the light rail sector. It replaces manual, paper-based systems with a streamlined digital process for applying, reviewing, and managing permits to work near or on tram infrastructure – improving safety, compliance, and operational efficiency.
“The Permit+ platform has already proved itself delivering up to 80% time savings when processing permits at Edinburgh Trams and has since completely replaced previous ways of working. We are delighted to receive commendation in a renowned national award for this achievement, which we hope other industry leaders will note as they have the opportunity to benefit from the same efficiencies and enhanced collaboration between applicants, engineers and the control room the Permit+ platform provides.” - Antony Stevenson - Managing Director, Codemakers Limited

“We’re delighted that the Permit+ platform has been highly commended at the Computing Cloud Excellence Awards 2025. This reflects the dedication of the Codemakers team who have worked with Edinburgh Trams since 2023 to build an efficient system that allows contractors to work safely near the tramway. Permit+ has transformed our workflow since implementation and has become a critical operational tool to help ensure that access to tram infrastructure is managed safely.” - Iain MacLeod, Authority to Work Manager, Edinburgh Trams
The recognition highlights the growing importance of digital transformation within the light rail industry, where cloud-based systems like Permit+ are driving real operational benefits and improving safety oversight.
Following the success of Permit+ at Edinburgh Trams, Codemakers is continuing to collaborate across the sector, supporting other networks interested in exploring similar innovations tailored to their operational needs.
