UKTram Lead Engineer, Phill Terry, attended a well-subscribed international webinar this month, exploring best practice in obsolescence management - a growing challenge across transport engineering and supply chains. Hosted by the International Institute of Obsolescence Management (IIOM) on 6th October, the session “Mastering Obsolescence: How to Measure, Monitor, and Manage What Matters” attracted more than 200 attendees from around the world.
Speakers from AMSYS, Alstom, LMI and Sourceability shared insights into tracking KPIs, balancing likelihood and impact in risk assessment, along with building long-term strategies for managing component and system obsolescence. Discussions also explored how adopting international standards can support earlier intervention and improved cost efficiency.
One of the webinar hosts Manuela Grundy, Chief Technical Officer at IIOM, delivered the well-received presentation on proactive obsolescence management and supply chain visibility during the UKTram and Light Rail Safety Standards Board Summit in September this year.
The event closely aligned with themes from this year’s UKTram & LRSSB Light Rail Summit,
Manuela's talk highlighted the importance of following recognised standards, prioritising high-risk components and emphasised that with the right systems and relationships in place, it is possible to mitigate supply chain risk. These key lessons sparked networking conversations during the event.

Obsolescence doesn’t stop at the supply chain’s first tier, and it certainly doesn’t stop at light rail. Managing it proactively ensures long-term safety, reliability and value for our networks.
Both the Summit presentation and the IIOM webinar underline that, in an evolving rail supply environment, early action and collaboration are vital to managing obsolescence effectively and sustainably. UKTram members are also invited to IIOM’s member meeting on 18th November in Milton Keynes.
