Record investment for local transport announced

This week, the Chancellor unveiled the largest-ever investment in local transport across England’s city regions, promising a step-change in funding for trams, buses and trains.


The announcement pledges over £15 billion of investment, with significant allocations for South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, the West Midlands, West Yorkshire and more. The funds are set to boost connectivity and support decarbonisation. Read our response here.


Edinburgh Trams celebrates 11 years of service with 11 milestones

Edinburgh Trams marks its 11th birthday with a look back at key moments from its journey so far. The network, which opened in May 2014, has achieved several milestones, including free Hogmanay services, unwavering support during the 'Beast from the East' storm, and the launch of the Trams to Newhaven extension in 2023.


In recent years, highlights include breaking passenger records during Taylor Swift’s visit in June 2024 and the introduction of the Tap On, Tap Off (TOTO) payment system in May 2025, linking trams to Lothian Buses’ TapTapCap. Congratulations to the team on 11 years of success!


Metrolink’s £147m renewal programme progresses

The next phase of Greater Manchester’s £147 million tram network investment begins next week, as Metrolink replaces key tracks between Piccadilly station and Piccadilly Gardens.


The essential works, running from 3 June to 10 August, are designed to future-proof the network and maintain record-breaking patronage figures. Detailed plans are in place to minimise disruption and ensure services run smoothly during major summer events, including Oasis at Heaton Park and Parklife.


TravelSafe live chat to launch in October

TfGM is set to enhance passenger safety across Greater Manchester’s Bee Network with a new 24/7 TravelSafe LiveChat, launching this October. The feature will allow passengers to quickly and discreetly report crime and antisocial behaviour, getting real-time assistance from trained staff.


As safety perceptions improve, the initiative supports Mayor Andy Burnham’s commitment to a zero-tolerance approach on public transport.

Metro to Washington project moves forward with £1.85bn funding deal

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness has secured a £1.85bn transport funding deal, paving the way for the 13km Metro extension to Washington.


Nexus is holding nine public drop-in events in June and July to share project plans and gather feedback on the route, which will link Pelaw and South Hylton stations using the Leamside Line. The first trains are expected by 2033.


Spotlight on West Yorkshire's light rail ambitions

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire and her team toured Manchester's KeolisAmey Metrolink network this week. The visit, hosted by the world's leading tram operator, offered insights into best practice and operational excellence.


With plans for a better-connected region, Mayor Brabin said, "It’s time for trams in West Yorkshire."


UKTram Board visits Coventry Very Light Rail

This week, UKTram Board members had the opportunity to visit Coventry’s demonstration track for the city’s Very Light Rail (VLR) project. This visit offered a first-hand experience of the innovation and progress taking place on this scheme, which aims to deliver a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to traditional light rail systems.

Tramdriver World Championship to take place in Vienna

The inaugural Tramdriver World Championship is set to take place in Vienna’s historic Rathausplatz on 13 September 2025. This international competition will bring together 25 teams from cities including San Diego, Rio de Janeiro, Melbourne and Hong Kong, to showcase their skills and celebrate the important role of tram drivers.


Visitors can enjoy a day of engaging contests, interactive exhibits plus a festival atmosphere with activities throughout the event. The event is free and open to all, offering a unique opportunity to learn about Vienna’s tramway heritage while supporting the spirit of teamwork and international cooperation in the light rail sector.

Seaton Tramway is marking Father’s Day with a special offer - Dads and grandads can enjoy a free tram ride when accompanied by a paying child on 15th June. The day promises a memorable experience with lunch or a traditional Devon cream tea at the Tramstop Café.


Additionally, visitors can take part in the Driver’s Eye Experience for a unique perspective on the scenic journey. It’s a wonderful way to celebrate Father’s Day with a touch of nostalgia and family fun.


Crich Tramway Village summer highlights

Crich Tramway Village has lined up an exciting programme of events for the summer months, offering something for everyone. Highlights include the Manchester Historic Vehicle Club visit on June 16, showcasing a wide range of classic cars, and the popular Past Times event on June 21–22.


Music lovers can enjoy live performances from local groups like Uke Wrks and the Derwent Valley Wind Band along with model tram displays, classic motorcycles and even dinosaurs returning in July. There's plenty to explore this summer at Crich Tramway Village.
