Nexus welcomes next generation of engineering apprentices

Ten new apprentices have started their careers with Nexus, beginning a four-year Engineering Maintenance Technician apprenticeship. The new cohort was selected from more than 500 applicants and will develop the practical skills needed to maintain key infrastructure across the network, including ticketing equipment, lifts and escalators, CCTV, fire alarms and station lighting.

The apprentices will initially train with TDR Training in mechanical, electrical and fitting skills before moving into their Nexus teams for on-the-job training. The programme has already provided a successful route into long-term careers, with nine out of ten previous Nexus apprentices progressing into permanent full-time employment after completing their training.

Cathy Massarella, Managing Director at Nexus, said:

“Congratulations to all our new apprentices. We’re delighted they chose us and hope this is the beginning of a fulfilling, challenging and enjoyable career with Nexus. “We’re an essential public service in the region, and on top of the day-to-day operations, we’re also leading on some huge projects, so it’s a great time to join us. Apprentices are the future of our workforce and I’m looking forward to seeing this group progress.”

The latest intake also demonstrates the different stages at which people can begin a career in the sector.

At 17, apprentice Mirren Smith is starting out after an interest in understanding how things work led her towards engineering. Fellow apprentice Glen Hind, 36, previously worked as a police officer and sees the apprenticeship as an opportunity to gain a trade and begin a new career.

Developing clear routes into the sector and helping more people understand the range of careers available across light rail are important priorities for the industry, as operators look to develop the skills and expertise needed for the future.
