The Chancellor’s Spending Review, announced today, reaffirms the government’s commitment to improving local journeys and investing in modern, sustainable transport systems, including light rail.

Rachel Reeves confirmed last week’s landmark investment of £15bn into transport infrastructure, calling it the “biggest ever investment of its kind”, and citing beneficiary projects such as metro extensions in Tyne and Wear, tram renewals and modernisation in Sheffield and West Yorkshire’s Mass Transit system.
The Chancellor stated: “It is no good investing in new skills, new jobs, and new homes, if they are not properly connected”, adding that investment in infrastructure would go alongside “strict guardrails for sensible spending” to unlock the development of thousands of homes.
Welcoming the news, UKTram Chair Steve Edwards comments:
“I’m sure I speak for all our members in saying that the recently announced funding for public transport and particularly light rail is a real game changer. This investment is a significant development that will not only improve journeys nationwide but also create numerous opportunities for employment and skill development within the industry and our supply chains. Whether it involves new systems, extensions, or renewals, we are committed to collaborating with our members and project promoters to ensure that the industry is well positioned to fully leverage the potential this investment presents.”
As UKTram continues to champion collaboration and knowledge sharing across the sector, this is a clear signal that light rail remains a critical part of the government’s plan for regional growth and more sustainable transport.
