UKTram joins the PWI (Permanent Way Institution) Technical Board

UKTram Lead Engineer, Phill Terry, represented the organisation at the Permanent Way Institution (PWI) and joined the online Technical Board meeting on 10 September 2025. This was following a technical visit to Cemex Rail Solutions and their sleeper manufacturing facility near Rochester.

The PWI Technical Board brings together corporate members to share knowledge and discuss the latest developments in railway engineering, with the meeting also providing a forum to introduce new members and outline their role in the wider industry.

Representing UKTram as a new corporate member, Phill highlighted the organisation’s role as the voice of the UK light rail sector and the importance of building closer links with the wider rail industry.

Phill explained:

“I believe this will be a great partnership between the PWI and UKTram, allowing collaboration across the whole railway sector with avenues into training, expertise and knowledge sharing.”

The September meeting included updates on forthcoming PWI Technical Education courses, seminars and visits, as well as an opportunity for members to share insight into common challenges.

Phill added that forums such as the Technical Board provide UKTram with valuable access to experts across railway engineering, as well as the chance to contribute to knowledge sharing that supports improved standards and collaboration.
