UKTram’s Light Rail Operators Committee (LROC) met in Edinburgh on 26th March, with the session hosted by Edinburgh Trams at Gogar Tram Depot.  The meeting offered another valuable opportunity for operators across the sector to engage in open discussion and share insights.

A key highlight was Edinburgh Trams’ presentation on the Lead Mind system, a fleet-agnostic, multi-OEM digital platform for fleet management and safety. The discussion covered its implementation, the development of automatic braking and refining speed profiles across the network.

The presentation prompted a beneficial discussion on speed monitoring and system responses to real-world conditions such as slip-slide and varying infrastructure. It also identified new areas for consideration, reinforcing LROC’s role as a forum for sharing practical experience.

The discussion highlighted the complexity of implementing new systems in practice, with operators noting that solutions are refined over time and often require multiple iterations and sector collaboration.

Transport for Wales also acknowledged the value of the group, recognising the support and insight shared by members as it progresses its South Wales Metro project ambitions. There was a clear commitment to continue working closely with LROC as the scheme develops.

The meeting concluded with Steve Mabey announcing he will step down as Chair after four years in the role. In his closing remarks, Steve reflected on the value of the group, sharing that he had “taken a huge amount of value from the discussions” and that the experience had “massively helped [him] grow as an individual”.

Steve also highlighted the importance of in-person engagement, describing himself as a strong advocate for the conversations that take place beyond the formal meeting, which he considers an essential part of the group’s success.

Steve added:

“It’s been an absolute privilege to work alongside such a collaborative, committed and professional group of colleagues from across the sector. The progress we’ve made together, the shared learning, and the open exchange of operational best practice are things I’m hugely proud of. I’ve taken a great deal of value from the role and from everyone involved over the years.”

Following his announcement, members expressed appreciation for Steve’s leadership, recognising his commitment and the positive environment he fostered.

UKTram would like to thank Edinburgh Trams for hosting the meeting and for sharing valuable operational insights and Steve Mabey for his leadership and contributions to the committee over the past four years.

The next LROC meeting is scheduled for June, with plans currently underway to confirm the location and host.
