UKTram shares vision for future growth at UITP Light Rail Committee in Toronto

UKTram’s Operations Manager, Steve Duckering, represented the UK’s light rail sector at the 81st UITP Light Rail Committee Meeting in Toronto from 27th to 29th October 2025, joining global leaders to exchange innovation and operational insights.


The biannual meeting brought together senior representatives from systems across Europe, North America, Asia and South America to explore emerging trends in light rail, such as vehicle maintenance and socioeconomic impact.   


Steve presented “A Vision in Motion: UKTram’s Blueprint for the Next Phase of Light Rail”, outlining the organisation’s long-term strategy and the work of its member systems to strengthen the case for sustainable urban transport.

Alongside technical sessions and working group updates, delegates toured Toronto’s extensive streetcar network and maintenance facilities, gaining insight into the operation of a 24-hour system serving one of North America’s largest cities.  


Steve also highlighted growing international interest in the UK’s Very Light Rail (VLR) trial in Coventry, sparking discussion on modular track innovation and autonomous technology.

Reflecting on the event, Steve said: 

“The UITP Light Rail Committee offers a truly global platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration. It was encouraging to see such strong interest in UK-led innovation and to continue contributing to UITP’s working groups, which play a role in shaping light rail worldwide.” 



UKTram continues to actively represent its members within UITP working groups, including those on Safety and Operations, Rolling Stock Maintenance, Statistics and Socioeconomic Impact, ensuring the UK sector remains engaged in international best practice and future-focused debate.
