West Midlands Metro honours light rail pioneer Geoffrey Claydon with tram naming

One of the light rail sector's most respected and influential figures has been honoured by West Midlands Metro by naming a tram in memory of Geoffrey Claydon. The ceremony took place on Thursday, 2^nd of July at Edgbaston Village, where tram 40 was officially unveiled as 'Geoffrey Claydon CB' before invited guests from across the light rail and heritage tramway community.

Following a welcome from Sandeep Shingadia, Executive Director at Transport for West Midlands, the unveiling was carried out by Lord Richard Faulkner, with tributes also shared by David Frodsham, Colin Robey and David Keay.

The event recognised Geoffrey's lifelong dedication to tramways and heritage preservation and the development of modern light rail across the UK. A passionate advocate for trams from an early age, Geoffrey's connection with the sector began in 1939 during visits to his aunt in Wednesbury. What started as a childhood fascination became a lifelong commitment that would see him play a significant role in shaping both the heritage and future of light rail in Britain.

Alongside a distinguished legal career in the civil service, Geoffrey brought his professional expertise and passion for trams together in the early 1990s when he accepted a project to modernise railway and tramway legislation. The resulting work helped establish the legal framework that supported the development of modern light rail systems across the UK.

Within UKTram, Geoffrey was perhaps best known as the founding Chair of the Heritage Tramway Committee, a role he held from its inception until his retirement in 2022. Throughout his time with the organisation, he worked tirelessly to promote collaboration across the sector and ensure the preservation of the UK's rich tramway heritage.

Geoffrey's name will now continue to travel across the city he loved, ensuring his remarkable contribution to light rail is remembered for generations to come.

"Having had the pleasure of being taken under Geoffrey's wing, I owe a huge part of my own development, and that of the sector, to him. Geoffrey was one of my key mentors from a young age.’’

Following the unveiling, guests travelled aboard the newly named tram to Millennium Point before gathering at The Woodman to continue celebrating Geoffrey's remarkable contribution to the industry.

For those who knew him, Geoffrey will be remembered not only for his knowledge, leadership and achievements, but also for his generosity, beaming smile and unwavering commitment to the people and organisations that make up the light rail family.
