A visit to Harworth highlights innovation and quality in S&C systems
UKTram representatives recently visited Voestalpine Turnout Technology UK Ltd in Harworth to gain insight into the latest developments in switch and crossing (S&C) technology and quality assurance processes.
The visit took place on 14th April 2026, with UKTram represented by Lead Engineer Phill Terry and Stakeholder and Innovation Manager Tim Bilby, alongside Craig O’Brien from Light Rail Safety and Standards Board.

Hosted at the Harworth facility, the visit provided an opportunity to view the setting-out yard, where S&C units are assembled and tested prior to delivery. Attendees were also introduced to a range of new and innovative products, showing the breadth of solutions available across the rail sector.
The session included a presentation from Voestalpine Turnout Technology UK Ltd, alongside brief overviews from UKTram and LRSSB outlining their respective roles within the light rail sector. This was followed by a product viewing and quality assurance demonstration, including the use of digital mapping to assess and analyse assembled units.

While the panel observed during the visit was designed for Network Rail infrastructure, it provided beneficial insight into the commitment to quality and assurance applied throughout the process.
Reflecting on the visit, UKTram Lead Engineer Phill Terry said:
“A comprehensive and useful discussion was held between the two parties. The visit also highlighted the potential value for UKTram members, particularly within the Light Rail Engineering Group (LREG), with the possibility of a future group visit to the Harworth site being explored.’’
A comprehensive and constructive discussion took place between attendees, with opportunities identified to further engage the light rail sector with the technologies and approaches demonstrated.
Thanks were extended to Richard Maher and Catherine Crisp of Voestalpine Turnout Technology UK Ltd for hosting the visit and facilitating a detailed and informative session.
